A new health insurance plan will include Walmart’s Health Centers as a feature. The retailer is teaming up with insurance startup Clover to offer Medicare Advantage plans across the state of Georgia.
The “Live Healthy” plans will be structured as a PPO — consistent with Clover’s other MA plans in the eight states where it operates. Members will have access to Walmart Health’s clinics across the state, which offer primary care, dental, hearing, x-rays and other services.
Clover’s software will also integrate with Walmart Health providers to provide data and surface information that might be important for each patient.
The plans have no copay for primary care visits, lab tests, and preventive dental exams. They also include other benefits, including $100 every quarter to spend on over-the-counter items at Walmart. They will be available in eight Georgia counties, many of which are located in the Atlanta metro area.
Walmart Health’s locations in Dallas, Calhoun, Loganville, Newnan and Cartersville will be included in the plan, along with 31 hospitals and more than 8,000 providers in the Atlanta region. Statewide, Walmart has already opened seven of these clinics, according to a list compiled by James Gardner, a Boston-based retail health consultant who closely follows Walmart Health. And Walmart has said it plans to open more in the future.
“The Walmart brand is synonymous with the best value and low prices, and that’s exactly what we’re doing at Clover,” Clover Health President and CTO Andrew Toy said in a news release. “By offering affordable insurance plans with an open network of doctors and hospitals, we are democratizing high-quality care and bringing it to individuals and communities that have previously been overlooked by other insurers.”
Walmart isn’t the only retailer testing the use of its clinics in insurance plans. Earlier this year, Aetna piloted a new plan featuring parent company CVS Health’s MinuteClinics in Kansas City. The plans would let members access appointments at CVS’ clinics with no copay and get a discount in health-related items at CVS stores.
